A DELICATE SPORT: Snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park

The warnings were clear: lackluster snowfall, high winds and icy conditions in Rocky Mountain National Park. But the lure was enticing—a snowshoe hike with a ranger for two hours of trails. For someone who has never donned a pair of snowshoes before, the offer looked appealing. During the past four years, park rangers have collected would-be snowshoe enthusiasts for hikes during the winter months. "As boomers have aged," says ranger Susan Langdon, "they’re looking for a less stressful way to get out in the wilderness. Less stress on their joints." Snowshoeing is as easy as walking, she says, as we will discover.
